Norma Desmond is a character in the film Billy Wilder Sunset Boulevard.
An aging former star of silent film, Desmond (Gloria Swanson), has retired to his mansion in Beverly Hills, near Sunset Boulevard, nursing dreams of a return to stardom, while his contact with reality is increasingly blurred over the years. His only companion is Max (Erich von Stroheim), her butler, former director and we learned later, the first husband, who acts as his protector and shields the outside world. Because he is still love with her, he tells her she is still a star, and the cut of the media to prevent realization that has been completely forgotten his audience wanted.
One day Joe Gillis (William Holden), a young unemployed screenwriter Desmond comes with a flat tire in 1946 after Plymouth being pursued by two repo men. He parks the car in the garage of the mansion and is convened by NORMA at the front door. She mistakes him for an undertaker for his recently deceased pet chimpanzee.
Norma learns that Joe Gillis is a writer and actually asked me to take a look at a manuscript she has been working for a while. It is the story of Salome, and that he plans to star in it, though she is way past his prime.

DeMille, who worked with Desmond. Desmond is euphoric, Gillis who sees a chance to regain his youthful promise, and put it up in style, shopping clothes and pay their expenses. Max Gillis sees through immediately, but holds his farce, because it makes his beloved "Madame" happy. As time passes, However, Desmond becomes increasingly unstable when it is clear that there is no hit movie in the works for her, and increasingly jealous and dependent Gillis. She confesses her love for him in a New Year party, but rejects her and leaves.
He attends to the other party, which flirts with the first screen writer Betty (Nancy Olson) and makes plans to leave the mansion of Norma. Norma makes a suicide attempt, and when he returns to console Joe, she seduces him.
Meanwhile, Paramount calls again for Norma. She believes DeMille wants to produce his script. Currently, Paramount just wants to use their vintage cars in a movie. While that visits Norma DeMille on the set, Max learns that the calls were about the car. Gillis says he, but hides this Standard. DeMille himself takes pity on her and says what you hear.
Gillis started writing a script with secret Betty, and Betty tells him she is in love with him. When Norma have heard a telephone conversation Betty, in an attempt to scare her away, invites Betty to the house and confesses the situation, euphemistically, "a woman more than well-done" and a "man Young is not doing very well. "
After removing Betty, Norma Gillis says it is gone forever. Desmond breaks and shoots him to death, leaving his body floating in her pool and going into shock. When the police arrive, she thinks you are just her adoring fans and the production team for his film. Elegantly making great strides towards a news camera, pronounced iconic line, "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.
