why did gothic revival differ from gothic movement and arts and crafts?
am studying history of design and writing an essay on gothic revival! just wanting to know why did gothic revival differ / and how did it differ from gothic movement and arts and crafts
I think the gothic revival appeals to young adults trying to make sense of their new developments, their new associations, and their new perspectives.
Young adulthood is an unspoken scarey-ness – and I think within that mind set…it’s safe to be more scarey looking. It’s a way of casting off looks of disapproval. It’s a way of excusing anti-social behavior. It’s a way of “giving the finger” to the status quo (law and order, regiment, and rules – especially societal norms).
I hope that helps…
