I’m no emo…these are just words that come to mind when I think of Emos.
It is more than a collection of words on pages. Is your book. Your baby. But other people know about his greatness? Well, that depends. What do your pages look like?
This page design is where to play. You can have the most fascinating and significant, Nobel masterpiece worthy of the block, but will be very lonely on the shelves, if anyone wants to buy.
Here is how John Q. Citizens for a book store. The saunters your favorite bookstore, with nothing in particular that you are seeking. Grab a great book by its cover (more on that next month), or because you have an interesting title. He opens, browse pages a couple of times, closes the book and puts it back. Why not buy has much to do with the page layout.
A book with the guy who is too small, or have narrow spaces between the lines is hard to read. And hard to read is difficult to sell. You want page layout secrets from the compositors of bestseller? Keep reading.
Let's talk about the sources. Look at his collection of books and pay attention to the sources. Letters should be sufficiently great to read without straining the eyes. They should have good looks on the page. Should be adequate for both the reader and the book. For example, if you look at the children's section a bookstore you'll find in large print. It is easier for little eyes to read. And the variety of available sources allows the source to match the personality or age groups of readers.
Good choices for body copy are Garamond, Caslon, Goudy, Stone Print, New Century School Book, and Janson Text 55 Roman. Now, for the head of chapter and subheadings, you can go with a bold font, like Helvetica Bold, Gill Sans Bold, Eras Bold, Univers Black, and Franklin Gothic Demi. Just as a reminder, all caps are hard to read, so do not use them – even their titles, or table of contents.
The space between them. We used called spacing in typing class, but the term "leader" simply refers to the space between the written lines. The size of the 10 (ie point source of 12 points, etc) as well as line spacing, gives his measure. For example, 10/12 (read 10 out of 12) is 10 points with 12 points main. The golden rule is that the body of the text, its leader should be approximately 120% of the text point size. Thus, for text of 10 points will need to use 10/12 or 12-point text 12/14.4. Furthermore, if the length of the lines were long, you want to increase the length of their leader. Proportional text was retained, as well that makes it easier to read.
One can justify this? Most books today are set with full justification type. You know, when the final words evenly on the right side. This makes the page look full, and has a narrower, more professional appearance. And people can read faster, because your eyes are not constantly to adapt to different widths. Which brings me to my next point …
How long is too long? Reading long lines causes fatigue – and do not want people to fall asleep reading your book, right? But then, if lines are too short, the text is choppy and break many words and phrases. A happy medium is to establish lines of about 65 characters. Set the column width to allow at least a 1 "to 1.25" gutter, and .5 "Border of the top, bottom, and out.
There's more inside a book than I thought! All of these techniques adds appeal potential readers, and that means more book sales. And who knows, might end up with the next big best seller!
